POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) — The Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In starts today and already there were some tense moments in the sky for a pilot headed to the event. The pilot, Kyle Davis, 22, and his passenger, Joe Surowiec, were flying from Winter Haven to Lakeland Sunday when they experienced engine failure. Realizing the engine wouldn’t cooperate, Davis was able to land the homemade plane safely on Havendale Boulevard. “The options for me were land on the road or land on the lake,” Davis said. Davis is a …

One thing he did wrong: flying extremely low.

RE: bcaway’s comment 2 weeks ago
What 3 things did he do wrong?
What he did right was to get the plane down WITH NO INJURIES… no damage due to the landing.
Reports are it was a MECHANICAL problem with the engine, not lack of fuel.
That adds up to: he did EVERYTHING right.

as a provate pilot , i consider this landing not bad . that´s why the minimum safe altitude is 500 feet . so if the **** hits the fan . there is time to spot the landing

he was probably goin for a feild and that didnt work….the only thing that dosent play out is y there were no cars on the road….maybe he got lucky.

There were cars on the road. You can see a truck passing in the video. But it’s not exactly rush hour at 930 on a Sunday morning

yeah coot! *** kind of pilot are u? turning off the engine is part of the power off landing procedure during an engine failure to ensure the engine will not restart unexpectedly during the landing.
June 1st, 2009 at 22:01
bullshit. there would be a cdar on the road wouldnt there?
June 3rd, 2009 at 03:27
No it wasn’t. When you are training for engine outs you don’t land on a public road. That’s something you only do when you have no other choice.

Its an instructer training a pilot yo. it was planned.
June 7th, 2009 at 10:00
If you are actually a pilot you would know that when you have engine failure and you are committed to a forced landing it is proper procedure to stop trying to restart the engine. Restarting the engine when you are too close to the ground would destabilize the plane for landing. The cameras were there because they were going to Sun & Fun and the passenger is a professional videographer. End of story. If you knew what you are talking about you would not need to be so disrespectful.

Knock Knock **** OFF im a polit and havendale is a road about a half mile from gilbert airfeild in winter haven and i dont know about most airplane but my cheroke aero do not have cameras on board so thats a somethign else to look at and another thing watch the FUCKING copolit turn the engine off at the end!!!!STEVIE WONDER could of seen this was a set up
June 11th, 2009 at 10:45
ahm.. i hope he didn’t plan it.. i don’t really know much about flying but i can’t imagine that flying without engine is easy with such a small plane.. so i mean it must be quite dangerous.. furthermore.. the police would have fucked him if he did it just for fun.. i dont think that this is legal!?
June 14th, 2009 at 13:04
How DARE you claim to know these guys. You obviously DO NOT or you would know these two pilots did not, would not ever, do any such thing. They almost got killed doing a favor for a friend, and for extra fun they have pieces of crap like you going behind their backs. NICE.
June 17th, 2009 at 16:30
Ok sorry to inform you. I know this guy and he totally planned it. I live in winter haven were this happend. If you notice near the end of the video his copilot actually turns the engine off.. lol… you’ve all been punked.
June 20th, 2009 at 08:32
Uh….no alarm signal goes off in any general aviation aircraft when an engine fails. A more terrifying alarm does occur: the absence of sound.
June 21st, 2009 at 17:35
I like the guys little subdued clap at the end, and the way the pilot parked off the road…then apologised..haha.
A very nice little movie of a real life event..
Hats off to the pilot and the passenger for not being a couple of screaming amateurs. Good job there was no women on board, a disaster would have happened for sure..hehe.
June 24th, 2009 at 06:52
oooo and this was a kit plane Mr. 4000 hours…
June 26th, 2009 at 03:16
stop lying you dont have no 4000 hours… that is total B.S. I have 800 hours on a PA 23-160 Piper Apache I own..
June 27th, 2009 at 19:08
They really should add that road to my website!
emergencyrunways (you know the rest).
June 28th, 2009 at 21:43
You can hear (at 1:16 ) in his voice that he was shitting bricks, but he stayed so calm when it mattered. Good stuff
June 30th, 2009 at 18:36
Even tho I don’t think that arguing with somebody that just insults makes sense, but just to proof U wrong: I have been a Hobby Pilot for the past 12 Years. I fly on a Cessna C172, have just over 4000 Flight Hours and had a emergency landing on Kerry airport (Ireland) in 2001 as a result of a blown off engine. Believe me, being that funny and joking, is not an option. By the way: when a engine fails, a alarm signal raises in the cockpit, i can’t hear a thing there …
July 1st, 2009 at 15:40
i think you done a good job
July 3rd, 2009 at 15:22
wonder what the pilot would have done on the right if he was in control….
July 4th, 2009 at 00:19
EXCELLENT AIRMENSHIP!!!!!!
Can’t wait to read the NTSB report on final reason why the engine failed if they come out with one.
